The 4 Cs Of A Diamond
The 4 Cs of diamond grading are the standard of which all diamonds are measured.
Though some diamonds may be graded exactly the same, it does not mean that it is identical though it is classed the same. Every diamond has its own subtle differences and personality making it unique and rare in its own right.
The most important of the four Cs, Cut is is the measure that results in a diamond being noticeable from the other side of the room. No matter what the size of the diamond, light enters the diamond and is emitted with maximum brilliance when the diamond is cut with expert precision and symmetry. This is what allows a diamond to be as 'sparkly' as possible.
Cut grading scale
A perfect diamond is colorless and free of milky or cloudy whites or yellows. Diamonds with a low color grade have a yellowish tinge instead of the desired and higher graded diamonds which are colorless. Colorlessness allows for brilliance, free of blockage from yellow or brown tinge. Fancy colored diamonds are not to be confused with the aforementioned tinge. Fancy colored diamonds are brilliant in their own right but are measured by ‘intensity.’
Color grading scale
Diamonds have been forming under the earth’s surface for one to three billion years. Incredible amounts of heat and pressure make diamonds not only the hardest substance in the world, but also give it that clear composition. Sometimes, in that composition lies ‘imperfections’ called inclusions. Inclusions can be anything from tiny flecks, feathering, clouding, etc. any imperfection in the diamond’s composition that is not invisible. Some inclusions are not visible to the naked eye and still devalue the diamond. Generally, inclusions can interrupt the flow of light in the diamond making them undesirable and rendering a lower grade on the clarity scale.

1 Carat Oval Diamond On The Hand
Diamonds are measured by their weight and not their size. Because there are so many shapes, symmetries, variance in depths and cuts, weight is the most practical and universal to determine a diamond’s value. This unit of measurement is called a carat and one carat equals 0.02 grams (or twenty milligrams). Though it does contribute to the value of the diamond, the other Cs of the diamond truly determine its quality, which means Carat is important but not the most important.

A diamond's certificate authenticates that the corresponding diamond's specifications. Some certificates go beyond the 4 Cs and indicate other important details like its measurements, fluorescence, laser inscription, and more. Never buy a diamond that isn't accompanied by a certificate from a credible lab such as GIA, HRD, EGL, IGI, or AGS.
